Science communication in Flanders


You have just engaged in Science Communication. Perhaps it was your very first scicomm experience. If so, you're probably bursting with enthusiasm to continue to talk about your research / domain of expertise. But where to start? Well, we are keen to help you with this useful overview:

Each university has a scicomm department that organises different activities, ranging from children universities, science cafés to -even- science stand-up comedy.

2a. Events

Dag van de Wetenschap 

Every last sunday of November the Flemish government organises the "Dag van de Wetenschap", with numerous science activities spread all over Flanders.

Pint of Science 
The Pint of Science festival aims to deliver interesting, fun, relevant talks on the latest scientific research in an accessible format to the public – all in the pub.

Sound of Science Festival 
Flanders very own first music/science festival organised by Toon Verlinden (The Floor is Yours), Hetty Helsmoortel and a bunch of volunteers.

Focusdag Wetenschapscommunicatie
The FWO hosts this annual (and completely free) event to foster the exchange between the press, science communicators and scientists. The program is mainly in Dutch, but there are also some English lectures & workshops

b. Contests

Wetenschapsbattle / Science Battle
The Floor is Yours organises this very cool contest that challenges researchers to explain their research to elementary school children.

c. Blogging 

The science monthly magazine EOS is always looking for enthusiastic scientist who would like to blog in Dutch) about their research / domain of expertise on the EOS-website 

d. Training
SciComm Academy 

SciMingo organises a science communication academy for enthusiastic researchers who want to learn how to share their research as a comprehensible and compelling story. We focus on a.o. writing, infographics, video, social media and podcast.
